Planning your time

How long does it take to visit the Alhambra?

Alhambra Guide editorial teamUpdated

Short answer

The Patronato gives around three hours as the average for a general Alhambra visit. We would allow additional time for getting there, finding the correct entrance and any breaks you want. Your Nasrid Palaces appointment determines the route order; a tour’s advertised duration describes that particular itinerary.

Use three hours as a starting point

The official estimate concerns a general visit. It is not a stopwatch target for every visitor, nor the time from leaving your hotel to returning there. Our advice is to put the travel and arrival arrangements outside that allowance.

Choose a looser plan if you want to pause over details, take breaks or spend time on the parts that interest you most. If you have a fixed onward departure, work backwards from it instead of assuming that everyone finishes at the average.

Keep three different times apart

On a guided visit, the appointment with your guide, the palace admission slot and the end of the tour can all be different. Write down what each time actually refers to.

Your palace slot sets the order

The Alhambra General ticket gives the Nasrid Palaces an assigned entry time. Its other included areas can be visited during the day’s opening hours. This means you should decide what fits before the palace appointment and what fits afterwards.

For a late palace slot, we would plan the other areas first instead of assuming there will be enough time after the interiors. For an early slot, make reaching the palace entrance the first priority. If you book a guide, follow the confirmed meeting instructions rather than creating a competing route.

What if you have less time?

Choose what you are prepared to leave out before booking. A shorter guided product should be judged by its actual route; the word ‘express’ does not establish what you will see. Likewise, a day trip’s total length may include a journey and stops outside the monument. Compare the schedule, not just the number of hours.
